Hydrocarbon Bioremediation

Bioremediation is a means of cleaning up oil-polluted environment by exploiting the diverse biodegradation ability of micro-organisms to convert the hydrocarbon compound to harmless products by mineralisation and generation of carbon dioxide and water. It is a means of restoring oil-polluted environment to its original status. Oil degradation is a natural but slow process limited mainly by the supply of oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus. Hydrocarbon utilising micro-flora exists naturally, but in the presence of large amounts of degradable petroleum, the growth and activity of the micro-flora becomes limited by the availability of nitrogen and phosphorus. These activities can be accelerated through the use of indigenous mixed populations of hydrocarbon degrading micro-organisms, and by adding nutrients to stimulate their growth.

Bioremediation of Oil Polluted Lands

OBD-Plus® is a combination of nutrients and special micro-organisms including oil degraders. Generally, during oil spillages as much as possible of the oil is physically recovered, while the polluted land is left to recover under natural conditions without treatment. In many cases such recoveries take years, while in  some cases the damage may by permanent. Application of OBD-Plus®, however, ensures rapid bioremediation of such oil polluted lands and their quick return to normal productivity. The oil degrading micro-organisms contained in OBD-Plus® act fast breaking down the oil into nutrients which subsequently render the soil fertile.

Oil Storage Tank   Clean – Up

Clean-up exercise of the oil storage tanks using most of the available chemical surfactants or detergents usually results in undesirable residues difficult to dispose of. Bio-surfactants produced from OBD-Plus® will do a much better clean-up job releasing more oil from the storage tank than surfactants and will produce no undesirable residues. In this case, liquid OBD-Plus® will be used.

Effluent Treatment (Produce water) from Exploration and Production

OBD-Plus® is a useful application for the treatment of effluents of exploration and production before the effluents are discharged into the environment. The effluents are channelled into a series of shallow ponds where they are treated with OBD-Plus® liquid/suspension before being allowed to flow into the environment. OBD-Plus® will biodegrade the oil in the effluent.
